What to Expect When Going to Rehab

May 15, 2023
By
Dr. Darren Lipshitz MD

Your interest in reading this information serves as an indication that maybe you or someone you love is struggling with a substance abuse problem. Furthermore, it's an indication that someone, perhaps you, might be ready to wave the white flag and seek help. We're here to support you every step of the way.

Hollywood Hills Recovery is in the business of helping people like you arrest their drug or alcohol addiction disorders. Before we can do that, two things have to happen. First, the addiction sufferer has to be willing to admit they are helpless in the battle against their drug or alcohol addiction. Second, they have to recognize that they probably can't win the battle on their own. They will need help from a quality rehab facility like Hollywood Hills Recovery.

We'll assume this would be your first stint in a drug/alcohol treatment center. With that in mind, we would like to ease your concerns and motivate you to join us by telling you what to expect from going to our inpatient rehab.

The Intake Process

Upon arrival at our rehab facility, we'll want to take you through an intake process. This is a very important part of the treatment process because it affords us the opportunity to access the depth of your addiction and the circumstances surrounding your situation. From this information, we should be able to chart a treatment course that gives you the best chance of arresting your addiction.

About the Hollywood Hills Recovery Rehab Facility

Before discussing the treatment process, we thought it would be prudent to introduce you to our inpatient facility. After all, this would be your home for the next 30 to 60 days, longer if necessary.

Our facility is nestled in an upscale portion of the Hollywood Hills, overlooking the city. The decor is upscale and modern with private rooms and baths. Our meals are prepared in a top-class kitchen by a top-class chef.

Therapy and counseling are provided by some of the best therapists and counselors in the business. Each and every one of them is driven to help clients like you arrest their addictions on the way to full recovery. Our facility is designed to cater to smaller groups, where you'll get plenty of one-on-one time and personalized care.

During your downtime, you would be free to enjoy scheduled outdoor activities, watch TV, listen to music, play pool in the rec room, or simply commensurate with your fellow peers.

Everything is designed to make you feel at home. That way, you'll be more likely to put your best foot forward during treatment.

Time to Detox

Assuming your addiction is substantial, the first step in the treatment process would be to place you in one of our detox programs. This might be necessary because time is needed to help you safely battle against any withdrawal symptoms that might come about. That's what enables clients like you to better focus on therapy and counseling.

Though they might vary based on the substance abused, here are some general withdrawal symptoms that could cause you health issues:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Rapid heart rate and increased blood pressure
  • Hallucinations, nightmares, or DTs
  • Body tremors or convulsions
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Inability to control thoughts or body movements
  • Psych issues like depression and anxiety

In most cases, we prescribe a medically monitored detox program. The program is run by medical professionals who are charged with monitoring clients to ensure they are safe as their bodies get used to being denied the substance of choice. If any client shows signs of distress during the detox process, a medical professional would step in and prescribe the proper relief medication(s).

Most detox programs run 5 to 7 days, longer if a client has an extreme addiction to something like heroin/fentanyl or alcohol.

Therapy and Counseling

With a clear mind and body, it would be time for you to start working with our therapists and counselors. The goal of treatment would be very clear. It would involve us working together to identify the root cause or causes of your addiction. Why is this necessary?

If we can't find the root cause or causes of your addiction, the issues would still be lying in wait under the surface as you leave rehab. The moment you get out the door, you would be at the mercy of those issues, issues that could drive you right back to your substance of choice. That's not recovery, it's a bandaid. We need to identify the causes so treatment can be directed at resolving the causes.

Here is a list of therapeutic options we might employ:

  • Traditional one-on-one counseling
  • Evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Dialectal Behavioral Therapy
  • Holistic therapies like art/music, recreational, mediation, yoga, equine, etc.
  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Dual Diagnosis Therapy for co-occurring disorders (addiction & mental health)

After identifying the root cause or causes, the therapeutic process would be geared towards addressing those causes to the point of resolution. That would open the door to helping you develop the right set of coping skills. These are the skills you would need on the outside to help you manage triggers and temptation. With better coping skills in tow, you would be far less likely to relapse.

Recovery and Aftercare

When treatment has concluded, you would be free to walk out of our rehab facility. Hopefully, you would be doing so with a new lease on life and a great desire to maintain your sobriety.

Note: We would be remiss to not mention that the relapse rate for first-time clients across all rehabs is around 40%-60%. That speaks to the power of drug/alcohol addiction.

We believe you can stay in recovery if we make sure you know where to go for aftercare resources. In fact, we are willing to strongly suggest that you take advantage of any and all of the following resources:

  • Initial occupancy in a sober living environment
  • Attendance in 12-Step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
  • Participation in Alumni events, programs, and workshops
  • Continue treatment in one of our outpatient programs

It is our belief that if you follow the program we design for you from start to finish, your treatment experience will lead you to a lasting recovery from your addiction.

We hope that you find this information useful. We also hope it serves as motivation for you to wave the white flag and reach out for help. When you are ready to do that, Hollywood Hills will be here to take you in and get you through the treatment process. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
