Congratulations on making the difficult decision to step back from everyday life for a bit to focus on self-care by entering a rehabilitation facility. Prepare yourself for rehab before you pack your things by asking yourself these 10 questions.

1. Do I need rehab?

Do you personally believe you abuse alcohol or drugs? You don't need to wake up in jail or get fired from your job to benefit from rehabilitation. Look for the beginning signs of problematic behavior to stop the progression of addiction in its tracks.

Signs that you have an unhealthy relationship with substances include:

  • Lying about use
  • Cravings
  • Personality change
  • Risky behavior
  • Excessive spending
  • Social withdrawal
  • Weight loss/gain
  • Disrupted sleeping patterns

2. Am I ready?

You will have better success on the road to recovery if you truly want to get help and attempt to maintain a positive mindset about the process. If you are ready, you sincerely want to change your lifestyle and not only appease family members or other authority figures. You will also show a willingness to listen to harsh criticism and put the necessary effort toward your new journey. If you fight every part of the experience and focus on less important things, such as the inability to post on social media for the duration of your stay, you may not get as much out of rehab as otherwise possible.

3. Who will handle my professional responsibilities?

If you work, you can't leave your employer in the dark. While uncomfortable, you need to talk to your boss to explain the situation (in as little detail as possible) to determine who will cover your job responsibilities.

4. How can I best handle my personal responsibilities?

Going to rehab can drastically improve your personal relationships with parents, children, and friends. Still, start planning how to improve damaged relationships and make distant relationships closer.

5. Will my insurance cover the costs?

Most health insurance covers the costs of rehabilitation. You still need to call the insurance company to learn about the details. If getting help from a parent or loved one, talk about what they will and will not pay for. When you clarify resources, you will hone in on the duration of your stay.

6. What do I want in a rehabilitation center?

A great rehabilitation center will have fully trained staff who not only treat the addiction but emphasize whole wellness, including nutrition, meditation, and mental health services. Some people also prefer a high-end rehab facility in a remote location that includes luxuries such as horseback riding, awesome scenery, and gourmet cuisine.

Hollywood Hills Recovery in Los Angeles, California, has everything you can want in a rehabilitation center and more! Learn about the health services and comfortable amenities you will enjoy at HOlly Hills Recovery.

7. Am I willing to make sacrifices for my future?

Do not make the mistake of thinking you will come out of the other end of rehab unscathed. Rehab requires grueling hours of mental and physical trauma that will eventually make you stronger. However, you will experience discomfort and temptation, and you need to overcome it to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

8. How will things change after rehabilitation?

When you return home after rehab, you may see the world differently. Ideally, the world looks brighter and full of possibilities, but you will inevitably also notice some less than desirable changes. First, you cannot drink or use drugs anymore. Unfortunately, the cravings may still exist, and they will test you once you don't have the structure of the rehabilitation center to support you.

You will need to find new support. You cannot end treatment when you get home, but you can switch to less intensive treatment, such as narcotics Anonymous and cognitive behavioral therapy with a therapist. It can also benefit you to limit the time you spend around certain people who don't act in the best interest of your sobriety.

9. What may happen if I don't go to rehab?

Rehab can prevent patients from making devastating decisions that come with life-changing consequences. If you don't go to rehab, how long until you do something you can't come back from? You may lose your family, your job, and your sanity. If things spiral out of control without getting help, you may even wake up in jail or not at all. For the sake of your mother and the people who love you, get help before a mistake results in unimaginable pain to your family that you can never undo.

10. When can I check-in?
